Reconnecting over Stroke Prevention- a Primary Care Update (Kingston)

The Stroke Network of Southeastern Ontario is pleased to announce an upcoming event. Please join us at "Reconnecting over Stroke Prevention- a Primary Care Update" being held on June 25th, 2024 at St. Lawrence College in Kingston from 1200-1600h. Please note that lunch will be provided at the start of the event.

Exercising with Stroke Survivors – how to make your exercise class accessible

Join Jacquie Levy (PT) as she delivers an  interactive workshop about making your exercises classes accessible for persons with stroke!

Target Audience:

This free, 2 hour workshop is designed for exercise and fitness instructors as well as therapists who promote and prescribe exercise as part of their practice.

Objectives: At the end of the session you will be able to describe:

Webinar: “Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults: An integration of Physical Activity, Sedentary Behaviour and Sleep”

Join us to hear Dr. Robert Ross discuss the new 24-hour movement guidelines, and learn how to implement them into your clinical practice. 

This webinar is intended for any health professional working with adults who recommends physical activity as a lifestyle method to improve health and minimize risk.

Objectives:

Describe the recommendations of the new 24 hour movement guidelines for adults

Describe where to find the resources and toolkits to assist with clinical implementation

Identify how they will use the new guidelines in their practice

*NEW* Stroke Care Continuing Professional Development Fund

The Stroke Network of Southeastern Ontario has established a Professional Education Fund to support the development of clinical skill and expertise of clinicians working in stroke care across the continuum. Eligible clinicians include physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, rehab assistants, personal support workers within Southeastern Ontario. Funding is available for educational opportunities offered within the fiscal year (April 1 – March 31), and is allocated by quarter. 

To apply for funding, please review and complete the application form.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicant currently works in stroke care
  • Education event is relevant to the stroke population
  • Stroke best practices are reflected in the program content
  • There is a clearly documented plan for the applicant to share learnings as appropriate
  • Applicant’s manager is in support of the educational opportunity

The Brain Body and You - Virtual session Fall 2024 TBD

This series is designed for front-line health care providers (eg. PSW, RPN, RN, Rehab Assistants and Restorative Care Aides) caring for stroke survivors and other related patient populations in the following care settings: long term, community, acute, rehabilitation, complex continuing care, and other related areas. Learn, perform, practice, and enhance your care and support techniques to promote safety, comfort, and dignity for stroke survivors and other client populations. This series of modules is offered in partnership with St. Lawrence College.

Modules:

  • Stroke care: Prevention to Life after Stroke
  • Cognition, Perception and Behaviour
  • Speech, Swallowing and Communication
  • Mobility, Positioning and Transfers

Shared Work Day & Field Training: Apply Now!

Choose the education program that best suits your learning needs:

1.    Shared Work Experience Program

One or more learners can spend time learning with a health care provider(s) working in stroke care.  A financial incentive of up to $200 is available to support the applicants.

2.    Field Training Program

This program is designed to support an educational event for a group of health care workers working in stroke care.  Financial support of up to $200 is available for an Instructor.

Purpose - Further develop stroke-specific knowledge, skill and professional networks for those working in stroke care.

How to Apply

1.   Identify the individual or group’s learning needs
2.   Select the education program (above) that best suits your needs
3.   Contact an appropriate learning partner or instructor

a.   You may contact the Stroke Network of SEO for ideas about possible teachers, mentors and peers that you may want to contact to help you arrange your learning program

b.   We can put you in touch with local Stroke Champion Nurses, PTs, OTs, Dieticians, Social Workers, Pharmacists and SLPs, etc. to help you plan your program

4.   Submit the application form for approval
5.   Submit the evaluation form to receive agreed upon funding
