Target Audience:

Champion Stroke Healthcare Providers (including but not limited to Allied Health, Health Promoters/Trainers, Nursing, PSW, Recreation Therapy, Rehabilitation Assistants, and Restorative Care) who regularly care for adults with aphasia in the community, acute care, rehabilitation, complex continuing care, outpatient, long term care and other related settings who are at the beginner level or those who are at the intermediate skill level but would like to refresh their knowledge and skills.

During this interactive session you will have the opportunity to:

  • Describe the types of communication problems that can occur following stroke
  • Explain the effects that communication difficulties following stroke may have on an individual
  • Identify characteristics of successful communication
  • Understand the psychosocial and other impacts of impaired communication
  • Identify strategies which may be used to support conversation
  • Practice strategies to support getting the message “Out” and “In”
  • Describe how the members of the interprofessional team can collaborate to support conversation
  • Identify opportunities you can use to integrate Supportive Conversation for Adults with Aphasia ™ (SCA™) into your practice and maintain your skill.
