Many of you will have seen our previous announcement that Kayla Purdon has moved into the role of Regional Stroke Best Practice Coordinator (prevention, hyperacute and acute focus). We are very grateful for the important work that Kayla led in the Community and LTC role and confident in the transition as Kayla hands off the activity in this sector to Sandra.
Sandra Liu, earned a BSc in Kinesiology at York University in 2002 followed by a BSc in Occupational Therapy (OT) from Queen’s University in 2006. She then completed a Master of Science degree in OT at Queen’s in 2007 that included research work on the perspectives of adults with mental illness in using a “Recovery Workbook”. Sandra has been practicing OT for the past 17 years at KHSC where her work included 9 years as the stroke team OT. During that time, Sandra worked with the stroke team in delivering evidence-based practice, and collaborating with patients, families and all care partners in advocating for best stroke outcomes. Sandra supported education and knowledge translation in her OT role, working with care providers in a variety of settings across the care continuum, including LTC Homes. She also developed and implemented a cognitive screening tool for use by the acute stroke team. Sandra has an expressed commitment to promoting patient and family-centred care and currently assists in delivering an OT course on client-centered communication at Queen’s University. Sandra’s steadfast dedication to client-centered care prepares her well to take on the role of Regional Stroke Community and LTC Coordinator. Kayla will be supporting Sandra through this transition and we look forward to welcoming Sandra to the program Jan 9th!
